Alzheimer's disease also called as senile dementia, is the common type of dementia, wherein there is an inability to acquire new memories and recent developments this can be diagnosed by some cognitive tests and brain scans if available.
The most prevalent symptoms of Alzheimer's are confusion, irritability, and usually long term memory loss; however the gradual trend of this leads to loss of bodily functions and death, the term of this disease is unaccountable, as it varies from person to person.
The cause of this disease is yet a speculative subject, many attribute it to the plaques and tangles in the brain, however there are no standard treatment that can effectively halt the growth of this disease. Expected life time of a person after this diagnosis is approximately around seven years.
Although a number of proposals have been made with regard to the treatment of this disease such as balanced diet, mental stimulation, changing life - style habits, there's an absolute lack of evidence providing support to the above arguments.
There are also several rival arguments that try to explain the cause of the disease, some of the most researched theories is

- Deposits of amyloid beta (Aβ)
- Relative of beta amyloid and not the beta amyloid itself.
- Myelin breakdown in brains.
- Oxidative Stress
- Loss of locus coeruleus.
Studies unveil the fact the reduction of glutamate, and Glu/creatine/Glu/myo-inositol are prevalent in patients suffering from AD. Along with it
Studies in similar field in mouse models have shown some markers which are missing in humans.
It's highly unfortunate to note that at present there is no cure for prevention of Alzheimer. Researchers have constructed a model linking cardio vascular risk, diet and pharmaceutical products to delay the onset of AD.
It's also asserted that indulging oneself in intellectual pursuits can produce a reduced risk of Alzheimer's. Smoking, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia are the negative factors stimulating the onset of AD, whereas nutritional foods such as bread, wheat, and olive oils negate the onset of AD. Moderate use of red wine is acknowledged partial inhibitor of AD. Drugs such as Medical Marijuana appear to be effective in prolonging the onset of AD, noticeably, as Medical Marijuana consist THC which stands as a barrier in formation of deposits in the brain.
So far the FDA has approved 4 drugs to be administered to the AD patients
- 3 Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.
- Memantine
It's sad to pronounce that no drug has yet been procured for delay or halt of AD, as snuffing of activities of cholinergic neurons are noted. Many inhibitors notable Acetylcholinesterase is applied to stump the growth of degeneration. The tablets that support them are Rezadyne, Exelon and Aricept. However only Aricept is recommended and authenticated for advanced cases of senile dementia.
Psychologist have come up with innovative treatments which consist of emotion oriented approaches, however there is a lack of firm researches and studies on this fields and there are no co operative evidences.
